Four English clubs ask about signing Mauricio Pochettino favourite, Chelsea want £5m profit - journalist

Chelsea are receiving several enquiries about their youngster, who they are looking to cash in on this summer.

Even though Chelsea do promote a lot of their young players to the first team, it’s impossible for everyone to carve out long careers at Stamford Bridge.

The current Blues first team includes academy graduates Reece James, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Josh Acheampong and Tyrique George. It’s a testament to the youth setup at Cobham that they keep producing top talents every year.

Incidentally, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly wants a mixture of youth and experience in the squad.

Several clubs enquire about Alfie Gilchrist

Alfie Gilchrist, who’s been with the Blues since an Under-11, is now tipped with an exit in the transfer rumour mill.

Despite the fact that the 21-year-old defender impressed on loan with Sheffield United last season, it doesn’t look like there’s a route for him into Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Gilchrist is expected to leave Chelsea this summer amid interest from teams in Saudi Arabia and England.

Journalist Ben Jacobs now claims via X that Championship sides Derby County, Watford, Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers have all enquired to sign Gilchrist.

It is explained that Chelsea want to sell him for around £5m and don’t want to loan him again. Incidentally, that would be £5m of pure profit on the balance sheet because he’s an academy product.

Chelsea supporters are upset about Gilchrist’s expected exit because they believe he’s got a very bright future ahead of him, so it will be interesting to see if they live to regret it.

Alfie Gilchrist was a favourite under Mauricio Pochettino

Gilchrist has played 17 senior matches in Chelsea colours, with all of them coming under Mauricio Pochettino‘s management during the 2023/24 campaign.

Back in January 2024, Pochettino hailed Gilchrist after a super impressive Chelsea display against Aston Villa in the FA Cup. In fairness, it was one of several strong individual displays from the fan favourite during the breakthrough season.

Perhaps it would have been different for the English youngster had Pochettino remained in the Blues dugout. Instead, he ended up leaving on loan after Enzo Maresca’s arrival.
