Report: Why Chelsea view Xavi Simons as a 'strong fit' for Enzo Maresca's side

Chelsea are still working on a deal to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig this summer, and it is unlikely that they will give up any time soon.

Chelsea have been in talks with Leipzig over a potential transfer, with the Blues being huge admirers of the 22-year-old for one particular reason.

Simons, though, is not the only player who is currently being targeted by Chelsea. The club are also trying to recruit his compatriot Jorrel Hato.

According to Fabrizio Romano, there is a very high possibility of Chelsea signing Hato before the transfer window closes.

Chelsea appreciate Xavi Simons’ versatility

In his career so far, Simons has proven to be a very versatile player, and it looks like that has caught Chelsea’s attention.

As per talkSPORT, the Club World Cup winners view the Dutchman as a “strong fit” for their team because of his versatility, hence their interest.

Chelsea signed Jamie Gittens earlier this month, but they have lost Jadon Sancho and cannot call upon Mykhailo Mudryk, leaving them a bit short on the left flank.

Left wing is one of the positions that Simons can play, while Chelsea could also sign Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho to give Enzo Maresca another option there.

United want to sell Garnacho this month amid interest from Chelsea and other clubs, but the clock is ticking. As things stand, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley swooping in for the Argentina international before August seems very unlikely.

Where Xavi Simons played last season

During the 2024/25 campaign, when on the pitch, Simons often took up positions on the left. However, there were games where the Netherlands international’s starting position was central, showing his versatility.

Simons actually prefers to play as a No.10, so the former PSV Eindhoven man could be an option to cover for Cole Palmer if he does go on to join Chelsea.

And right now, everything is pointing towards the Conference League holders getting their man.
