Enzo Maresca makes Jose Mourinho claim ahead of Champions League showdown with Blues legend

Enzo Maresca will be targeting his next Champions League game as one where Chelsea need to pick up all three points, and it just so happens to come against Blues legend Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea fell short against tournament big dogs Bayern Munich in their opening game, despite an impressive performance from Cole Palmer.

Maresca will have been aware that this was his toughest game on paper, and will be targeting the games at Stamford Bridge as ones where they will pick up the points to get through to the next round.

The first of those is against Benfica, who are set to announce Mourinho as their new manager in the coming days.

Enzo Maresca makes claim about ‘legend’ Jose Mourinho ahead of Chelsea meeting

The Portuguese boss is a two-time winner of the Champions League, however never even reached the final of the competition during his time in West London.

Maresca has admitted he is excited about the prospect of coming up against Mourinho, describing him as a Chelsea legend.

He said to Football London: “Absolutely. Absolutely, yes. He’s a legend for the club, he’s a legend in general for the trophies and achievements.”

Mourinho has a very positive record against the Blues in this competition, winning both games against them when he was in charge of Inter Milan in 2010.

However, recent outings against Chelsea have not been so successful, and this is something he’ll be looking to amend on September 30.

Mourinho eyeing turnaround of recent form vs Chelsea

Mourinho has lost more games than he has won against Chelsea, with plenty of those defeats coming in the recent meetings.

He has been victorious in just one of the last seven games against the Blues across his time at Tottenham and Manchester United, and the recent history between Chelsea and Benfica is not in Mourinho’s favour either.

The two sides met in a chaotic Club World Cup Round of 16 tie, which the Blues eventually won 4-1 after a near two-hour delay due to the weather in the United States.

Chelsea need to kick their Champions League campaign off with a win, however Mourinho would love nothing more than to ruin their parade.
