Jamie Carragher explains how Enzo Maresca has been 'let down' at Chelsea

As Enzo Maresca approaches nearly 15 months in charge at Chelsea, he should reflect very positively on his time at Stamford Bridge so far. However, Jamie Carragher has suggested that the Italian manager has been let down by some senior figures at the club.

Enzo Maresca, 45, won over the Blues fanbase by lifting two trophies in his debut season last year.

It is no surprise that Chelsea’s owners are delighted with Maresca because his transition since joining from Leicester City has been smooth.

Enzo Maresca’s record at Chelsea

Even though the Blues head coach has helped transform this current team, they are going through a mini blip, winning just one of their previous four games across all competitions. They desperately need a positive result when they host Brighton this Saturday in the Premier League.

Jamie Carragher claims Chelsea have let Enzo Maresca down in the transfer market

According to Jamie Carragher, Chelsea have failed Maresca in the transfer market by failing to sign one quality goalkeeper and one quality central defender.

Carragher wrote in The Telegraph: “Eventually, Chelsea must settle on a squad which needs a couple of tweaks to compete for a title and Champions League. They look like they enjoy recruiting too much for that to happen any time soon…

“The glaring flaws last season were in goal and at centre-half. Despite 12 new arrivals over the summer, those areas remain the Achilles’ heel…

“Five games into this season, Maresca has a right to feel let down by his recruiters. He has had a good 12 months, doing what was expected in the Premier League, winning the Conference League and adding the Club World Cup.

“But it has been a bad 10 days, drawing with Brentford, losing to Bayern Munich and United in successive games, and being 1-0 down at half-time to Lincoln City. Now José Mourinho is coming back to Stamford Bridge in midweek and Liverpool await next weekend. It feels like one of those key periods when Chelsea either look on track or they fall short, their lack of depth exposed.”

Chelsea still lack elite goalkeeper & centre-back

Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, lead the club’s transfer activity and have signed plenty of exciting youngsters. However, we agree that there are a couple of obvious holes in the squad.

It is quite telling that Maresca has concerns over the goalkeeper and centre-half position, which could lead to action in the transfer market in 2026.

While it is good news that Chelsea have cash to spend in January, it is mystifying that they still lack world-class quality in two key areas of the football pitch. Even when Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury in the summer, they still had plenty of time to try and bring in a replacement but opted against that.

At the moment, the Blues are crying out for an upgrade in net on current goalkeepers Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen

Meanwhile, Chelsea don’t have a fit and healthy elite centre-back like most of their rivals.
